Following the EU referendum in June, the Police experienced a 57% increase in the number of hate crime reports received to their online reporting site, compared with the same period 4 weeks before (1).

A report produced by Cambridgeshire Research Group (CRG) has found that, in the same month, police-recorded hate crime doubled in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (compared to the same period the previous year). This is the highest count seen in the area since the recording of hate crime began in April 2011. However, the UN have identified under-reporting as a current problem in the UK and, with the government’s hate crime strategy focusing on increasing reporting, levels may be expected to rise even further in the future.
